Newly-authorised investment manager AlphaTran Capital has launched a global long/short equity fund with a value and large capitalisation bias. The AlphaTran Fund aims to achieve an unlevered annual return of 20 per cent from a fundamentally-driven investment process, underpinned by strong input from industry sources. Individual company shorts are expected to be a key profit contributor.

The team at AlphaTran has been constructed around portfolio manager Damien Tran, a former partner with Chris Hohn’s The Children’s Investment Fund who has extensive shorting experience, alongside two former colleagues at TCI, Joseph Cusworth on the operations side and investment specialist Adrian Kowal.

The AlphaTran Capital team, which also includes two other experienced investment analysts, is completed by chief executive Christophe Beauvilain, previously a partner at Phylon Investment Advisors since 2003, following seven years as an executive director at Goldman Sachs in equity research and asset management as well as spells with Commerzbank and Chase Manhattan.

‘We have put together a highly experienced team at AlphaTran,’ Tran says. ‘We are delighted to have Thames River Capital as a founder investor already on board to seed the launch with USD50m, and will be seeking further investors over the coming months.

‘Current market volatility has created a lot of investment opportunities for funds such as AlphaTran and is an ideal environment for stock-pickers. The investment team is looking forward to demonstrating its ability to take advantage of market dislocation both on the long side and the short side.’
