Systematic London-based investment manager Aspect Capital has announced the expansion of its global presence with the opening of a new office in Hong Kong to be headed by Jan Chen, head of institutional business development for Asia.

Chen joined Aspect in 2002 from Lehman Brothers, where he worked in the private equity group, and has played an important role in the expansion of the firm’s client base in the Asia-Pacific region, over the past six years. Cyrus Hendry, who also joined Aspect in 2002, will work closely with Chen to further develop and strengthen client relationships in the region.

“I am extremely pleased to have established Aspect Capital Asia and to have completed the opening of our Hong Kong office,” says chief executive Anthony Todd. “The Asia-Pacific region is an area of significant strategic focus – our substantial and growing Asian client base represents a vital source of Aspect’s long-term business expansion.

“The location of a dedicated and experienced team of business development professionals in the heart of the region underscores our long-term commitment to providing impeccable standards of service to our clients.”

Aspect, which was established in 1997 by Todd, Martin Lueck, Michael Adam and Eugene Lambert, already has an office in New York and currently has USD4.8bn in assets under management.

The firm’s senior team has extensive experience in the development and implementation of systematic investment strategies. Adam and Lueck were involved in the development of Adam, Harding & Lueck (AHL, now a part of Man Group), a pioneer in the application of systematic techniques to investment management.

Aspect runs a range of systematic programmes in the tactical asset allocation and quantitative equity areas. The firm has a team of more than 100 professionals and invests heavily in the research-driven evolution of its quantitative alpha-generating trading systems and their efficient implementation across a wide range of liquid asset classes.
