Newly-launched alternative investment manager Duff Capital Advisors has announced the addition of two new investment teams and built out its senior management with the appointment of Andrew Wilder, Mike Khorrami, Charles Lerner, Laura Flynn and Maria Berenguer.

The strategies for the two new teams are focused on the utilities and merchant power sectors, led by Vedula Murti, and on various financial services sub-sectors, led by Morid Kamshad.

‘We are methodically gaining critical mass by strategically seeking the highest calibre investment teams and experienced senior leaders, which will allow us to develop both stand alone and blended investment strategies,’ says the firm’s founder and chief executive Phil Duff.

‘These individuals and investment teams greatly add to the experience, diversity and capabilities of DCA. We will continue to expand our strategies to include additional skill-based, non-correlated investment strategies and are committed to providing our clients with customised solutions.’

The Duff Capital partnership model is designed to enable investment talent to develop and focus on their expertise and strategies while benefiting from the firm’s risk management, operational, trade execution, legal and investor relations capabilities.

He was earlier chief operating officer in charge of trading at Brevan Howard, where he was instrument in the development of the firm into a multi-asset class, multistrategy platform. Khorrami began his career in foreign exchange options and hybrid derivatives trading at JP Morgan, subsequently becoming head of trading for non-equity products at Tiger Management and a portfolio manager at Credit Suisse and Omega Advisors.

Lerner, who joins Duff Capital as chief compliance officer, has more than 30 years experience in compliance and regulatory matters in the financial service industry, most recently as chief compliance officer of UBS-owned hedge fund investment adviser Dillon Read Capital Management.

He was previously a managing director for compliance and fiduciary risk at Bankers Trust Company, Deutsche Bank and BlackRock Financial Management, following spells as an attorney and senior counsel in the division of enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington DC and Director of Erisa Enforcement within the agency at the US Department of Labor that regulates private company pension plans.

Flynn, who joins Duff Capital as a managing director in the client advisory group, was previously a vice-president at Lehman Brothers focusing on institutional credit sales, specialising in corporate bonds, hybrid capital, single-name credit default swaps, credit derivative index products and collateralised debt obligations. She earlier worked in sports marketing and as an analyst for a boutique investment bank.
