Offshore law firm Conyers Dill & Pearman has opened Conyers Dill e Pearman (Brazil) Servicos de Consultoria in São Paulo, paving the way for the firm to provide offshore legal services from Brazil. This move makes Conyers the first offshore law firm to establish a physical presence in the South American nation.

Two Conyers partners have relocated to São Paulo, with managing partner Alan Dickson joined by partner Benjamin Dyer. Dickson (photo) spent the past eight years practising in the firm’s corporate department in Bermuda, following 16 years practicing corporate and securities law in Canada. Benjamin has practised corporate law for the past eight years with Conyers in Bermuda and Hong Kong.

The firm says establishing a presence in São Paulo is part of its strategy of organic growth designed to extend its capacity to provide advice on offshore law to clients in the world’s leading financial centres.

The São Paulo office will initially focus on general corporate, company and commercial work, with particular emphasis on investment funds, public company listings, initial public offerings and holding company incorporations.

‘Brazil is a dynamic market, and establishing a physical presence here provides a distinct advantage to our São Paulo-based clients and referrers of business,’ says Conyers chairman John Collis. ‘It strengthens our ability to provide a full range of our services to clients in their own business environment in a highly personalised manner.’

Adds Dickson: ‘Our physical presence adds value to the services provided by firms in Brazil. We give them reliable access to prime offshore jurisdictions. As the first offshore law firm in Brazil we expect to establish ourselves swiftly to consolidate our position as the leading provider of offshore legal services in Latin America.’

The opening in São Paulo follows Conyers’ decision to open an office in Russia in March this year and the establishment in October of a presence in Mauritius, reflecting the role played by Mauritius companies as the primary vehicle for foreign direct investment into India and Indonesia. Conyers now has 11 offices worldwide.

Founded in Bermuda in 1928, Conyers pioneered multi-jurisdictional offshore law services in 1982 when it established a Guernsey office as a base for servicing European clients, later superseded by a London office in 1998. It also led the way into Asia with the opening of its Hong Kong office in 1988 and a presence in Singapore in 2001.

The firm, which now has more than 500 staff including 150 lawyers, advises on the laws Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and Mauritius from those jurisdictions as well as from Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Moscow and Singapore. Affiliated companies branded Codan provide registered agent, registered office, corporate director, secretarial and company management services, as well as an affiliated global network of licensed trust companies that provide trust establishment and administration.
