John F. Harvey III, a lawyer with experience handling the tax aspects of fund formation, investment products and transactions, has joined international law firm Proskauer Rose as a partner in the Boston office.

Harvey, who was formerly an associate at the firm, joins from Wellington Management, an asset manager to institutions around the world, where he was director of hedge fund tax.

At Proskauer, Harvey will be a partner in the tax department, where he will focus on a wide range of matters, including: the tax aspects related to the formation, operation and investment activities of a broad range of private investment funds, such as buyout, venture and hedge funds; the tax consequences of alternative investment products; and transactional matters such as cross-border deals and corporate restructurings.

In addition, Harvey will be a member of the Private Investment Funds Practice Group. The group has been expanding its capabilities over the past several years, both to new geographic regions such as Hong Kong, where the firm recently opened an office, as well as existing locations such as Paris and London.

Steven M. Ellis, head of Proskauer’s Boston office, says: ‘John’s unique and varied skill set will serve as an ideal strategic complement both here in Boston and across the firm. Our private investment funds practice is extremely tax intensive and, as we expand our capabilities around the world, this experience becomes even more important. John is a key addition to what is already a tremendous platform.’
