International law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld has hired investment funds lawyer Ash Gulati as senior counsel in London.

Gulati joins the firm from UBS Investment Bank, where he was head of the prime brokerage and equity derivatives legal team.

In addition to being a specialist hedge funds and prime brokerage lawyer, he has led legal coverage of a wide range of structured equity derivative transactions.  During 2008, in addition to advising UBS’ equities business on its own position in connection with the Lehman default, and on consequent market stress, he was actively involved in industry conversations with hedge funds and investors in both Europe and the US, and with regulators, on the subjects of asset protection and counterparty risk.

Before joining UBS, Gulati was a senior assistant in the financial markets group at Simmons & Simmons.

David Billings (pictured), a partner in the firm’s investment funds and private equity practice group in London, says: ‘The prime brokerage landscape is undergoing a fundamental transformation in the wake of the Lehman bankruptcy and the wider financial crisis. Ash brings exceptional insights into this market and the legal and commercial issues on which our clients are increasingly focused. We are delighted to welcome him to Akin Gump.’
