Chilton Investment, a manager of hedge funds and managed accounts, has named Jim Steinthal general counsel and member of Chilton’s executive committee and board of directors, effective 1 January 2010.

He will succeed Norm Champ, who is leaving the firm at year-end to join the Securities and Exchange Commission as associate regional director for examinations in its New York regional office.

Steinthal currently serves as managing director and general counsel of Chilton’s various hedge funds. Prior to joining the firm in 2000, he was associated with the law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell for eight years.

Champ has served as general counsel of Chilton for the last ten years and also has served as a member of the firm’s executive committee and its board of directors. As a member of the board of directors of the Managed Funds Association, he has been a leading authority in the hedge fund industry on a wide range of regulatory and legal issues.

“We are both pleased and proud that Norm Champ will be taking on this important role in the SEC’s New York regional office at such a critical time in the evolution of the hedge fund industry,” says chairman Richard L. Chilton, Jr. “From our initial decision to register with the SEC, our firm has taken a leading role creating a culture of transparency, cooperation, and education with regulatory authorities. Norm has effectively built on those tenets and expanded these important relationships. During his ten years as our general counsel, Norm has played an instrumental role in reinforcing a culture of professionalism, integrity and openness at our firm. He has also been a valued partner and mentor.”
