Hedge funds ‘should explore Asia’s attractive opportunities’

There are still plenty of attractive opportunities in the Asian markets that warrant hedge funds’ attention, it is believed.

There are still plenty of attractive opportunities in the Asian markets that warrant hedge funds’ attention, it is believed.

Jan de Brujin, head of Asian equities at Gartmore and manager of the Gartmore Pacific Opportunities Fund, said that the uncertain outlook for the world economy has not undermined the potential that these countries offer investors.

He said: “While Asia would not be able to completely avoid the knock-on effects of any further downturn in the world economy, we believe that Asia’s economies will continue to perform well on a relative basis.”

The crisis of 1997 and 1998 has led to the region becoming much stronger from a fiscal and debt perspective, he added.

Mr Brujin suggested this has insulated Asia from some of the effects of any further global downturn.

Earlier this month, F&C Investments director of UK strategy Ted Scott warned that China could be facing the same problems as experienced by Japan in the 1980s.
