High profile spokespeople to attend International Business Summit in Jersey

Related Topics

A selection of the most influential business leaders working in today’s financial markets converge on Jersey in September to take part in the Exchange’s second international business summit.

In a wide ranging agenda, the one day Summit will tackle issues affecting future investment decisions and assess the regulatory changes emerging. It will aim to clarify where the engines for global growth are and how investment professionals can manage risk in current markets..

To make the event as meaningful and thought provoking as possible, the Exchange has invited a world class line up of speakers to reflect a cross section of opinion from the major financial markets of the world.

The speakers include Jon Moulton, described by the Daily Telegraph as ‘one of the best known figures in the British Venture Capital Business’. Jon is chairman of Better Capital and until recently Managing Partner of Alchemy, the UK based, high profile private equity firm.

The Summit will also feature Helena Morrissey, who heads up Newton Investment Management in London, who has been described  as one of the 100 most influential women in Europe by the Financial News.  She is also a Director of the Investment Managers Association.

Speaking on Risk Management will be Dr James Chu who, recently established Blue Sky Asset Management Limited. A former business development chief at American Express Bank and fund product developer at HSBC, James has the experience from working in financial institutions and the more recent insights into life heading up a boutique investment business at this unprecedented time in financial markets.

Robert Parker will be part of the panel focusing on Diversification and Durable Portfolios. He is a Senior Advisor to Credit Suisse and a member of its Investment Committee. Robert has responsibility globally for the management and development of new business and client relationships. He is Chairman of the Asset Managers and Investors Council and a board member of the International Capital Markets Association.

The Regulatory landscape will be the focus of Tajinder Singh (pictured), Deputy Secretary at the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO). Tajinder’s earlier role as Head of International Affairs and HR Development at the Securities and Exchange Board of India, adds to his deep appreciation of the Asian markets where he is now a prominent figure in formulating regulatory policy for IOSCO.

The views of London’s banking industry will be voiced by Angela Knight, CBE, a former MP and Economic Secretary to the Treasury, who after heading up the Association of Private Clients Investment Managers and Stockbrokers for nine years, took on the mantle of chief executive of the British Bankers Association. Angela has been the bankers’ spokesperson in the City of London during the most dramatic, turbulent and crisis ridden period in banking since the 1930s.

There may be no better known economist in the City than Roger Bootle, a former UK Treasury Adviser, Chief Economist at HSBC and currently Economic Adviser to Deloittes. Roger has written a number of books on monetary economics including ‘The Death of Inflation’ in 1996, a best seller which proved prophetic and ‘Money for Nothing’, which correctly predicted the financial crisis.

Joining Roger from the field of economics will be Paul Mortimer Lee, Global Head of Market Economics at BNP Paribas, responsible for the global economic coverage of the bank’s team of market economists. He previously worked for the Bank of England and for the International Monetary Fund in Washington. Another leading economist will be Paul Wharton, Chief Investment Strategist, Deutsche Bank’s Wealth Management UK, who has more than 20 years’ experience of investment markets and management and serves on Deutsche Bank’s UK and Global Investment Committees, while completing the economists representation will be Maya Bhandari, Senior Economist at Lombard Research whose current focus is on India, Brazil, Japan, France and Italy.

The views of all three are sought regularly in the financial news programme and print media and a moderator will be seeking to quiz each on their forecasts for the markets in 2010 and beyond. Chosen for this task is Anthony Hilton, the financial editor of the London Standard, an award winning, highly respected City journalist  and financial author with more than 40 years’ experience in journalism and front line publishing.  Mr Hilton, whose most recent accolade was the 2007 ‘Decade of Excellence Award’ given by the World Press, will chair two panel debates during the day.

The Channel Islands also contribute handsomely to the quality of the line up. Their contribution is led by Colin Powell, OBE, who many would regard as the most respected figure in the financial services industry in any of the offshore jurisdictions. He is Chairman of the Offshore Group of Banking Supervisors and he is an Adviser on International Affairs for the Chief Minister’s Department of the States of Jersey. Fittingly as the event is staged in Jersey where he has advised the Government for so many years, he will provide the keynote address.

The Senior Partner at Deloittes in Jersey, Greg Branch, will provide a Channel Islands perspective. Greg has more than 30 years’ experience in financial markets including 19 in Jersey and so is ideally placed to reflect on the Island’s role within the investment markets.

Jonathan Hooley, Chairman of the CISX will host the Summit. A chartered accountant who for many years was an international tax adviser to clients in the City of London, Jonathan retired as Senior Partner of KPMG in Guernsey in 2007.  In addition to his role as Chairman of the CISX, he is also an adviser to the Policy Council of the States of Guernsey.

Also speaking will be Tamara Menteshvili herself. Tamara has been chief executive of the Exchange since its formation 11 years ago and, along with the Board and Management, has steered its growth. She will review the progress of the Exchange, pinpointing how the Exchange has thrived in these turbulent times and examining the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Finally, Michael Jackson has 25 years’ experience of strategic business thinking and has worked personally for Richard Branson. He will be talking about the challenge of Change.

The speakers represent the views and opinions from all parts of the world. Tamara Menteshvili, chief executive of the Exchange, is delighted with the calibre of presenters. She said: ‘It’s a truly exciting event, one which brings together a formidable line up of inspirational speakers with expertise in a range of specialist areas in Finance for one day in Jersey in September.’

In addition to the two panel discussions, there will be ample time for further debate and networking in the break out periods between sessions.  Tamara added:

‘With so much knowledge and experience in the room and so many influential commentators coming together for this unique event, we are looking forward to a memorable occasion in which I am certain there will be many valuable insights delivered into the future of the international investment industry.’

The CISX International Business Summit takes place at the Hotel de France on Friday, September 10th and delegates are invited to attend at a cost of only £175 per head.
