Global asset managers targeting Asia advised to set realistic expectations

Greenwich Associates, the US-based financial consultancy, has released a report highlighting the need for US and European fund managers to re-assess their Asia expansion expectations. It notes that unlike the US, where over three quarters of institutional assets are managed externally, that figure is only 12% in Asia. Making competition fierce. And whereas most Asian assets are locked in key markets such as Singapore and Hong Kong, the institutions themselves are spread far and wide. The upshot? Logistics, culture, and language – not to mention costs – need to be carefully considered by non-Asian managers. Long-term growth prospects may look attractive, but it’s the day-to-day operations that could prove challenging.
