Sensato Capital Management, a San Francisco-based hedge fund is to receive USD50 million in seed capital from FRM Capital Advisors (FCA). Established in May 2009 by Ernest Chow and Jonathan Howe, both of whom were co-heads of active equity strategies at Barclays Global Investors (BGI), one of the USA’s largest money managers. The hedge fund itself focuses on Asia Pacific using an Equity L/S strategy. Although the actual size of the fund is not known, the additional capital will be used both to invest into the fund and to help further develop its 21st century investment platform. This is FCA’s second investment into an Asia-focused fund, and in today’s tough capital raising environment, a welcome fillip to Sensato. Commenting on FCA’s decision, Sensato partner and founder, Jonathan Howe, told Hedgeweek via email: “We are very pleased to be partnering with FCA. In the current climate, it’s challenging for a new firm to raise funds – even if the managers have extensive experience. A credible strategic investor like FCA, with its excellent reputation for conducting thorough investment, business and operational due diligence, is well positioned to take ‘first mover’ risk and pave the way for subsequent investments from institutional investors.”
