London-based Coupland Cardiff Asset Management LLP has announced plans to launch a UCITS-III compliant fund, the CC Asian Evolution Fund, in order to help investors gain exposure to Asia’s domestic growth profile. Asia is CCAM’s prime focus and area of specialty, having already launched the CC Asia Absolute Return Fund in 2005 (USD300 million). Speaking to Hedgeweek, Coupland Cardiff’s CEO, Richard Cardiff, said that the Dublin-domiciled Oeic would launch at the beginning of December with USD30 million to USD50 million and employ an Asia ex-Japan mandate. As Asia’s economies continue to grow, the fund will look to tap into the consumer sector. “It will be long-biased but we’ll be using index futures and options to hedge against market volatility,” said Cardiff. Rory Dickson (ex-Head of Research, Arisaig) will manage the portfolio from CCAM’s new Singapore office, supported by Damien Kestel who was previously Country Head of Singapore/Malaysia at CLSA Securities. A basket of 25 to 40 stocks will be used to generate returns, with small-mid cap companies being the primary focus.

“If it were live today, countries taking precedence in the portfolio would be Malaysia, India and Singapore, followed by China, Korea and Thailand,” explained Cardiff, adding that the fund was not heavily biased towards China. “Food & Beverage will be the largest sector we invest in,” said Cardiff, “as well as retail, education and even a small degree of healthcare.” By targeting smaller companies that bigger Asian funds do not necessarily give investors exposure to, the CC Asian Evolution Fund is already attracting interest from global institutional investors including family offices, although U.S. investors will not be able to invest. The fund will be launched initially as a private placement across Switzerland, UK and Luxembourg and has a target size of USD350 million.
