Ogier – Best Offshore Law Firm

Related Topics

Ogier has one of the industry’s leading reputations when it comes to advising global international financial institutions, having been at the vanguard of offshore financial market development for more than 50 years. Its legal services department provides legal advice on all aspects of BVI, Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey law. With some 52 partners and 187 lawyers, Ogier is able to handle cases of any size and complexity and prides itself on its ability to offer expert, efficient and cost-effective legal advice.

Nine international offices from Bahrain to Tokyo means Ogier’s legal team is able to respond to client enquiries around the clock. Unsurprisingly, the firm’s expertise has been frequently acknowledged within the financial and legal communities through multiple awards over the years; this year it has won the Hedgeweek award for Best Offshore Law Firm.

Ogier Cayman currently counts more than 135 professionals among its ranks in both its legal and fiduciary services departments. Recognising its importance as the world’s preferred offshore jurisdiction among fund managers, the firm appointed four new partners – Chris Russell, Nick Rogers, Angus Davison and Andrew Morehouse – to its Cayman office at the start of 2010, further widening Ogier’s breadth of expertise.

Commenting on the firm’s expansion, Ogier Cayman’s managing partner Peter Cockhill says: “Notwithstanding challenging market conditions, our practice has grown considerably over recent years, and winning this award endorses the wealth of experience and broad skill base accessible within Ogier. Being named as Hedgeweek’s Best Offshore Law Firm of the Year is a fantastic achievement for us.”

Ogier Cayman’s primary focus is on financial services. Legal expertise is offered in numerous areas that include banking and finance, corporate and commercial, investment funds, private wealth, litigation restructuring and insolvency, direct investment and infrastructure.

The Cayman office has a strong and well-established client base, of which around 60 per cent consists of investment funds. Ogier currently acts for 42 of the largest 100 alternative investment managers. It also acted on behalf of four of the nine investment managers chosen by the US Treasury to partner in the Public-Private Investment Programme. Its clients are spread worldwide, from the Americas and Europe to Africa, Asia and Australasia.

Specifically, Ogier Cayman provides offshore legal advice on fund formation and structuring, regulation and deregistration, as well as providing constant advice to existing investment funds, managers and administrators.

A full range of administration services are offered to private equity, property and mezzanine funds, while director and trustee services are also offered (Ogier Cayman holds a trust licence and a mutual fund administrator’s licence issued by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority),

Additionally, Ogier Cayman works seamlessly with the firm’s London and Hong Kong offices to provide Cayman advice in all time zones. Oliver Godwin, a partner in Ogier’s London office who accepted the award, says: “The key attributes that set Ogier apart from its competitors are depth of knowledge, client service, innovation and transparency. We believe our offshore legal services are among the best in the world, and I thank the readers of Hedgeweek for voting for us.”
