Former COO of Algebris Investments LLP, Maria Gabriela Bianchini, has decided to set up a hedge fund advisory firm in Singapore to support fund managers thinking of setting up in Asia reported Bloomberg this week. The advisory firm – Optionality Consulting – will also advise clients on regulatory compliance, an area of ever-increasing complexity. One of the firm’s objectives, according to Bianchini, is to help Asia-based managers become “viable candidates” for new capital inflows: industry AUM topped USD2trillion, an all-time high, last month. “Managers always need to have performance, but now they also need to have systems, risk management and process,” Bianchini was quoted as saying. Indeed, in a recent report by Deutsche Bank, 70 per cent of investors said implementation of regulation was a relevant development in the hedge fund industry, with 40 per cent citing it as the most important current development. Bianchini added that moving forward the relevant regulatory jurisdiction wouldn’t be where fund managers sit “but where the investors sit”.
