GAM has given UK retail investors the opportunity to invest in its USD55million GAM GAMCO US Equity fund, which launched almost 25 years ago, by offering a UCITS-compliant version of the strategy reported Investment Week. New York-based GAMCO manages the strategy, an independent investment boutique whose GAMCO Asset Management business is supported by institutional broker/dealer Gabelli & Company. A retail share class for the fund was launched by GAM earlier this month on the Irish Stock Exchange. Minimum investment is USD10,000. The UCITS will feed directly into the US Equity fund and will be managed by chairman Mario Gabelli (pictured), winner of the 2011 Institutional Investor Award: ‘Money Manager of the Year’.

The fund’s investment approach is to target undervalued companies that Gabelli believes exhibit features to support improved performance. Other US strategies offered by GAM include: GAM Star US All Cap Equity fund and GAM North American Growth fund. In what is a strange coincidence, the UCITS fund launched 3 August 2011 amidst wild market swings in a similar fashion to the US Equity fund, which launched 20 October 1987, one day after the infamous Black Monday. GAM will no doubt be hoping that this is a good sign. The GAMCO US Equity fund has generated cumulative returns of 11.46 per cent over five years according to Trustnet Offshore. As of end-June, the portfolio’s highest weighting was in consumer discretionary (25.8 per cent).
