Hamburg-based Aquila Capital have already seen some impressive results for the UCITS CTA fund they launched in May. Whilst many funds saw performance cliff dive as markets took a hammering and volatility prevailed, the firm’s AC Spectrum Fund returned +9.88 per cent in August according to HFMWeek. The UCITS Alternative Index CTA, by comparison, was down 0.38 per cent last month. Hedge funds fared even worse, the HFRI Fund Weighted Composite Index falling -2.53 per cent. Since the AC Spectrum fund launched it has returned 9.44 per cent overall. Professor Harry M Kat heads up the Aquila Capital Quant Team. He said that efficient diversification was one of the main pillars of the fund, both across markets as well as fundamentally different strategies. “The Spectrum team combines long standing practical expertise with deep academic insights to create a unique product for Aquila Capital,” said Kat. CTA hedge funds tend to perform well during market dislocations and have near-zero correlation to equity markets. The average global CTA returns for August, according to Eurekahedge, were +0.39 per cent. This goes to show just how well Aquila performed last month.
