Sciens Fund of Funds Management Holdings, part of the Sciens Capital Management Group and provider of single- and multi-strategy funds of funds and managed account services, has appointed Rhian Lloyd to the new position of “Chief Operating Officer – Managed Accounts”.

Sciens has also hired both James McNeillie and Filippo Brera to the position of Legal Counsel, also for its Managed Account Platform (MAP).

The appointments follow a recent announcement of the substantial growth in assets under management (AUM) of the MAP since its acquisition from Partners Group.  From April 2010 until August 2011, the AUM increased by 73% bringing the total number of managed accounts to 24 and the AUM to USD699m[1].

Dr Stavros Siokos, President of the Sciens Fund of Funds and MAP businesses, commented, “We are delighted to appoint Rhian as COO of the platform. Since her arrival at Sciens in 2010, she has played a pivotal role in positioning and developing the activity on the platform.  This is evidenced by the number of new cells launched and the dramatic increase in AUM.  The platform benefits greatly from her extensive experience in the hedge fund industry and her legal and operational expertise in derivatives and alternative investments.”

In addition to her new role, Lloyd is being promoted from her original position of Assistant General Counsel to “General Counsel – Managed Accounts”, and is involved in all legal and regulatory matters affecting the MAP. Prior to joining Sciens, Lloyd managed the derivatives and alternative investment legal functions at Threadneedle, a UK investment management firm and previously had been Head of Legal at CQS UK LLP, an alternative asset management firm.  Earlier, Lloyd was associated with the law firms of Dechert LLP and Wedlake Bell LLP and latterly, was Counsel at Crowell and Moring within their investment management department.  Lloyd is qualified to practice law in New York and in England and Wales and holds a BA (hons) degree in Law from Trinity College, Cambridge University.

James McNeillie, who reports to Ms Lloyd, is responsible for legal matters affecting the platform.  Prior to joining Sciens, McNeillie worked at National Australia Bank Limited, London branch for three years and was responsible for the provision of internal legal advice in respect of various banking transactions, primarily in project finance, energy and infrastructure as well as related derivative product areas.

Previously, McNeillie spent nearly two and half years at Standard Bank plc providing legal advice for a wide variety of trade finance, commodities and derivative related transactions typically with an emerging markets focus in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and South America. McNeillie began his legal career at Allen & Overy LLP, qualifying as a Solicitor into its Project Finance Group in March, 2003, where he remained for eighteen months working on a number of international project, acquisition and property finance transactions.

Filippo Brera is involved in legal matters affecting the MAP. Prior to joining Sciens, he worked at Goldman Sachs (London) within the legal derivatives documentation group dealing with derivatives, prime brokerage and clearing matters. Prior to that, he worked in Sydney at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, in London at RBC Capital Markets, Merrill Lynch and in Milan at UniCredit Banca Mobiliare S.p.a.  He is qualified to practice law in Spain and holds a Masters in Financial Markets Law from Universita’ degli Studi Milan, a degree in Law from Universita’ Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Milan and a degree in Law from Universitat Abat Oliba CEU Barcelona.

Lloyd says: “The recruitment of the two additional legal counsel is a clear indication of the strength of the managed account platform and of its anticipated growth. We believe that their experience will be of great advantage to both investors and partners involved in the managed account platform, especially given their expertise in derivatives, multiple asset classes, and in global jurisdictions.”
