State Street Global Advisors (SSgA) has appointed Michael Ho to chief investment officer for its active emerging markets equities and global macro capabilities.

Ho, who will be based in Boston, joins SSgA from Mellon Capital Management where he oversaw all investments as chief investment officer, responsible for approximately USD220 billion in assets under management, spanning all investment disciplines including global tactical asset allocation, currency, quantitative equity, active and passive fixed income and index equity strategies. Earlier in his career, Ho was head of research for Global Tactical Asset Allocation and oversaw hedge funds at Mellon Capital where he generated a strong performance record.

Ho reports to Alistair Lowe, global chief investment officer for Active Equities. In this new role, Ho will manage the Active Emerging Markets team and lead the development of global macro strategies with the support of SSgA’s Advanced Research Center and other investment teams.

Lowe says: "The addition of an experienced investment professional like Michael underscores our commitment to having the highest quality investment talent at SSgA. Michael’s experience allows us to expand our capabilities in Active Emerging Markets and advance our efforts in building a strong Global Macro strategy. Our hedge fund affiliate SSARIS Advisors has delivered strong results in fund-of-funds, multi-strategy and single strategy funds and we are committed to growing these capabilities. By adding a global macro strategy we can further strengthen the solutions we deliver to our clients.

"Over the past several years, the active emerging markets team has delivered strong investment results for our clients. Michael’s extensive and well-rounded experience in managing portfolios, leading investment teams, working with client and consultant relationships and generating business development opportunities will no doubt help us to more aggressively advance this area of our business."

Ho holds a doctorate in management science and engineering and Master of Science in engineering-economic systems from Stanford University.
