Bedell Cristin makes senior hire to strengthen BVI expertise

Bedell Cristin has appointed Valerie Georges-Thomas to head up the firm’s British Virgin Islands office.

Georges-Thomas (pictured) was previously a partner at Appleby in the firm’s corporate and commercial practice group. Her appointment follows on from Bedell opening an office in Singapore in July, headed by BVI lawyer Stephen Adams.

Bedell’s BVI law practice, represented in Jersey, Singapore and the BVI, acts as a gateway for the flows of corporate business from China and the wider Asian region. The BVI office will also service clients in North America and the growing markets in Latin America.

Georges-Thomas advises on all aspects of structuring and formation of hedge and private equity funds and on a broad range of corporate and commercial law transactions. She has been at the forefront in advising on the new securities and regulatory legislation in the BVI and its implications.

Simon Pascoe, partner and Jersey-based head of Bedell Cristin’s BVI legal practice, says: “A key strategy at the firm has been to enhance our capabilities in providing BVI law to international clients to meet the growing demand for offshore legal services from Asia. We had already established a successful BVI team in Jersey, and this year we have extended our reach and offered BVI law in Singapore and followed this move by appointing Valerie in Tortola. Her extensive experience in advising on BVI structures and on regulatory developments that affect BVI law will further strengthen our offering at a time when our business is continuing to grow.”
