Liquid alternatives specialist AlphaSimplex Group has hired Alistair Lowe (pictured) in the newly created role of senior advisor to the firm’s investment committee.

Lowe, an investment industry veteran, was most recently consulting with several investment management and financial technology firms. Before that he was with State Street Global Advisors, where he was chief investment officer for global equities and, previously, CIO of global asset allocation and currency.

“Alistair brings broad and deep experience with asset allocation and quantitative strategies to help support and build upon AlphaSimplex’s successful growth,” said Duncan Wilkinson, CEO of AlphaSimplex.

In his new role, Lowe will focus on management of the research process. Working closely with Wilkinson, and investment committee members Chairman and Chief Investment Strategist Andrew Lo, Chief Investment Officer Xiru Zhang and Director of Strategic Research Alex Healy, he will help set the firm’s research agenda and prioritize and track projects and research ideas. He reports to Wilkinson.

Lowe joined State Street Global Advisors in 1996 as head of the firm’s investor solutions group. He began his career at NatWest Investment Management in London, moving to roles in New York and Boston. A native of the UK, Lowe holds a master’s degree in economics and a post-graduate degree in computer science from Churchill College in Cambridge, UK. He is a dual UK and US citizen.

AlphaSimplex has added Client Portfolio Manager Brent Mathus to its staff. Mathus will focus on building and reinforcing relationships with institutional and international investors.

“We are delighted that Brent has returned to support AlphaSimplex’s continued growth,” says Wilkinson. “Brent’s alternative investment product marketing expertise and deep understanding of AlphaSimplex’s strategies and process will help us meet increased global interest in our products.”

Mathus has over 17 years of experience in quantitative asset management, hedge fund operations, and business development. Most recently, he was chief operating officer for Arialytics, a Rye, NY-based financial technology company. Previously he was with Eclipse Capital Management in St. Louis, MO, where he served as managing director and, before that, head of trading. Earlier in his career, he was head of trading at AlphaSimplex Group, and a member of the firm’s investment committee and business development team. Mathus holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a concentration in finance and banking.
