Related Topics

Edison, the international equity research firm, has appointed Robert Murphy as its new Head of Investment Trusts as part of the division’s ongoing expansion.

Murphy joins the London office as head of investment trusts in the UK. Formerly a managing director of equity research at HSBC London, he led the coverage of the major global investment banks and worked on numerous strategic projects for Group and Global Banking & Markets.

A chartered financial analyst, Murphy has more than 25 years’ experience as a fund manager and equities analyst. Before HSBC, he was global financials analyst at Gladstone Partners, covering companies across North America and Europe and spanning banks, insurers and real estate. This followed a number of fund manager roles held at Merebis Capital, GLG and Gartmore, managing funds targeting financial companies and delivering significant returns. Murphy began his career as a graduate trainee at Henderson Global Investors, before joining JPMorgan as an analyst covering European banks and real estate.

Murphy’s appointment marks a significant increase in the strength and depth of Edison’s Investment Trust team, which has grown to five dedicated analysts covering more than 60 trusts from blue-chip global asset managers to specialist funds focused on healthcare and specific geographies.
Robert’s experience as a fund manager and his understanding of the financials and real estate sectors will be central to achieving the highest quality of investment trust research, and to further expanding the range of companies that Edison covers.

Murphy says: “As Edison is the largest provider of investment trust equity research in the UK, this is an exciting time to join the company and I look forward to working with the team to deliver the high quality of research for which Edison is known. Investment trusts can offer excellent opportunities for investors seeking both reliable income and capital growth over the medium to long term. In the light of recent market volatility and increasing interest in trusts from investors, informed research can play a major role in helping investors identify the best investment opportunities.”

Fraser Thorne, managing director at Edison, says: “We are delighted to welcome Robert to our London team as Head of Investment Trusts. The increasing popularity of investment trusts in the UK means that the value of high-quality and widely distributed research has never been greater, both for the trusts and for their investors. This creates a strong opportunity to further strengthen our investment trusts offering, building on the team’s strong performance and recent client wins. Robert’s depth of experience will help to continue performing highly in terms of quality of research, while also supporting the team’s future expansion.”
