CBL Markets, a spot exchange operator for environmental commodity markets, has appointed John Melby to its board of directors.

Melby (pictured) is the managing partner of an independent consultancy where he advises major energy companies, financial institutions, governmental agencies and exchanges on energy and environmental markets.

“We are delighted to welcome John to the CBL Markets board as he brings a wealth of knowledge in environmental and energy markets,” says Donald H Putnam, chairman of CBL Markets. “Our team and clients will benefit from his expertise as we continue expanding into new markets and products.”

Previously, Melby was the managing director of North American markets for the Green Exchange, an international environmental exchange that was purchased by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME).

Prior to Green Exchange, he was the president and CEO of APX, where he oversaw the company’s development as a premier infrastructure platform for all major renewable energy markets in North America and greenhouse gas markets worldwide. Prior to APX, he was a senior director of marketing and product development for the California Power Exchange and a lead consultant at M&R Strategic Services in Washington, DC.

“CBL Markets is in a unique position as a spot exchange delivering solutions to the environmental markets that reduce transaction costs, support liquidity and remove frictions to trading,” says Melby.

CBL Markets recently announced a partnership with APX to launch spot US REC contracts, and the availability of CBL California Carbon Allowance (CCA) futures from CME Group to be tradeable via the CBL Markets exchange.

Melby led the creation of the first Carbon Allowance futures contract for California’s greenhouse gas market in his role as managing director at the Green Exchange.
