Europe’s leading seeding platform, IMQubator (IMQ), and Synergy Fund Management, a Hong Kong-based fund manager established by Eliza Lau, former CEO and CIO of SAIL Advisors, one of Asia’s biggest FoFs, have teamed up to source and seed the next generation of Asia-Pacific managers. The two companies have formed a mutual business development advisory, with each leveraging its expertise: under the agreement, SFM will source the next breed of exciting managers, whilst IMQ will advise SFM on seeding and accelerating hedge fund managers. China and Japan will be the main geographic focus. Jeroen Tielman (pictured), CEO and Founder of IMQ, said that the premise of the mutual advisory was to explore “the possibility of a joint activity in seeding and accelerating emerging hedge fund managers based in Asia”.
Tielman said Asia offered “myriad opportunities” and expected China to produce some exceptional managers “in the coming years”. “We are expecting to see a swathe of managers spinning out of larger asset management firms or proprietary desks during the coming 12 months.” Lau, Founder and CIO of SFM, added that, importantly, IMQ and SFM share the vision on Asia developing a stronger hedge fund market. “We believe this advisorship will provide IMQ and SFM with a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of a relatively uncovered hedge fund manager market in the coming years. We’re looking forward to commencing the partnership,” said Lau. Talented managers in China with strategies in the CTA space represent a greater right now opportunity in Lau’s opinion given the highly active commodity exchanges on the mainland.
