Barclays Capital continues build-out of equity derivatives business

Barclays Capital has made a significant number of recent hires signalling the rapid expansion of its equity derivatives distribution, coverage and sales.


Commenting on the recent appointments, Dixit A Joshi, Managing Director and Head of Equity Derivatives said: “This continues our strong investment across the Equity Derivatives business. These hires will maintain the momentum we have had as we expand our trading capabilities and grow market share across institutional, corporate, investor and hedge fund clients.”


This month, Joshi announced the following hires in across the equity derivatives business:


Ed Ware joins as an Associate Director in Investor Solutions, effective 15 August 2005 and will be based in New York. Ware joins from BNP Paribas where he was in fund derivatives sales covering institutional investors.


Javier Martin joined as a Director in Equity Derivatives Sales – Spain, effective 1 August 2005. Martin will divide his time between London and Madrid. He joined from Societe Generale and previously Citigroup where he was responsible for Spanish and Italian equity derivatives sales.


Tetsuo Majima joined as a Director in Equity Derivatives Structuring – Japan, effective 1 August 2005 and is based in Tokyo. He joined from Deutsche Bank where he spent three years, most recently as a senior marketer in the strategic equity transaction group. Previously, he spent nine years at Merrill Lynch in equity derivatives structuring and marketing.


Other hires made to date this year, to support the build of the equity derivatives business, include:


Luca Agostini joined as a Director, Strategic Equity Derivatives – Italy, effective 4 July 2005 and is based in Milan. Agostini joined from Nexgen and previously Goldman Sachs where he was also responsible for strategic equity businesses in Italy.


Vincent Dumontoy joined as an Associate Director, European Equity Index Trading, effective 4 July 2005 and is based in London. Dumontoy joined from Societe Generale in Paris.


Hermann Bader joined as a Director, Strategic Equity Derivatives – Germany, Austria and Switzerland, effective 1 July 2005 and is based in Frankfurt. Bader joined from JP Morgan where he was head of corporate equity derivative marketing – Germany, Austria and Switzerland.


Priya Balasubramanian joined as an Equity Derivatives Analyst effective 27 June 2005 and is based in London. Balasubramanian joins from Lehman Brothers to expand equity derivatives research.


Peter Corrigan joined as a Director, Equity Derivatives Trading – US, effective 27 June 2005 and is based in New York. Corrigan joined from Societe Generale in New York.


Nick Nassuphis joined as a Managing Director, Head of Equity Exotic and Structured Product Derivatives Trading, effective 20 June 2005. Based in London, Nassuphis joins from CSFB where he spent five years, most recently as managing director responsible for European exotic equity derivatives.


Steven Lu joined as a Manager, Equity Derivatives Trading – US, effective 1 June 2005 and is based in New York. Lu joined from BNP Paribas where he was a vice president in equity derivatives trading.


Paul Weiss joined as a Manager in Equity Derivatives Trading – US, effective 31 May 2005 and is based in New York. Weiss joined from UBS. Bill Sarran joined as Associate Director in Equity Derivatives Sales – Emerging Markets, effective 23 May 2005 and is based in Hong Kong. Sarran joined from JP Morgan in Sydney.


Hans Hinden joined as a Director, Equity Derivatives Sales, effective 16 May 2005 and is based in London. Hinden joined from Morgan Stanley where he headed the equity derivatives flow business based in Switzerland.


Romain Le-Bon joined as a Manager in Investor Solutions, effective 15 May 2005 and is based in New York. Le-Bon joined from Commerzbank where he was in structured product sales covering private banks in Latin America.


Laurent Ichard joined as a Director, Head of European Hedge Fund Sales, effective 19 April 2005 and is based in London. Ichard joined from JP Morgan where he spent 7 years most recently as VP responsible for European hedge fund distribution of the equity derivatives product.


Emmanuel Machayekhi joined as a Manager, Equity Derivatives Trading – Asia Pacific, effective 12 April 2005 and is based in Hong Kong. Machayekhi joined from CALYON in Hong Kong.


Roberto Protei joined as a Director, Equity Derivatives Sales – Italy, effective 1 March 2005 and is based in London. Protei joined from Deutsche Bank where he was covering cash equity trading in Italy, Spain and Portugal.


Johnny Wu joined as an Associate Director in Investor Solutions, effective 26 January 2005 and is based in New York. Wu joined from Bear Stearns where he was in equity derivative sales covering institutional investors.


Barclays Capital has become one of the fastest growing players in the equity derivatives market over the last two years. In Risk magazine’s 2004 inter-dealer derivatives survey, it ranked No1 overall in exotic equity products and No2 overall in equity index options. In the recent 2005 Risk magazine corporate end user derivatives survey, Barclays Capital was ranked top 3 in structured equity notes. In January 2005 Barclays Capital received recognition as Risk Magazine’s ‘Derivatives House of the Year’ which cited that that the firm was “a bank to be reckoned with in equity derivatives.”
