Latin America specialist Copernico Capital Partners (Copernico), has strengthened its investment team with the appointment of Andre Caldas Oliveira.

Oliveira, a Brazilian national, joins the firm as a member of the Investment Committee, and will participate in the implementation of the Copernico Latin America Strategic Fund’s event driven investment strategy. He will also participate in the evaluation of opportunities across the region but focusing mainly on Brazil, with a concentration on special situations and equity markets.

Based at Copernico’s head quarters in Buenos Aires, Oliveira will spend a substantial portion of his time in Brazil, searching for opportunities and performing due diligence on existing and new investments.

He joins Copernico from Bassini, Playfair, Wright where he was a Portfolio Manager responsible for investments in Brazilian equities and special situations. Prior to this, Oliveira, a CFA since 2004, who holds a BS degree in Computer Science from UFRGS and an MBA from MIT, was a proprietary trader at Bank Itau in Brazil and an investment manager of AMBEV, where he managed three fixed income portfolios, totalling USD 700 million.

The CLAS Fund, with assets under management of USD 193 million as of December 2005, is an open-ended vehicle domiciled in Cayman. Listed on the Irish Stock Exchange, it offers investors two USD denominated share classes. Its class B shares, currently open to new investors, have had an average annual return of 16.05 per cent with an annualized volatility of 3.78 per cent since inception in October 2003.

As of December 2005, Copernico Capital Partners manages a total of USD 320 million through a combination of hedge funds and managed accounts, for global financial institutions, pension plans, private banks, funds of hedge funds, family offices and high net worth individual in Latin America, the USA, and Europe.
