Wood Creek Capital Management, LLC has appointed Avtar Vasu as the firm’s new Chief Investment Officer.

Wood Creek is a joint venture of Norfolk Management Group, LLC, an investment holding company specializing in alternative investments, and Babson Capital Management LLC, a leading US investment management firm.

Vasu, formerly a Vice President in the Alternative Investments Group at Putnam Lovell NBF, will guide Wood Creek in identifying and developing the next generation of alternative investments which are focused on proven but still-emerging niche strategies such as non-bank finance strategies, investments in intellectual property rights, and trading strategies in non-financial sectors such as energy and insurance.

With the tremendous influx of capital into hedge funds, combined with strong interest in investment opportunities outside of traditional capital markets, Wood Creek hopes Vasu’s appointment will enhance its market-leading position in the vibrant alternative investment niche.

"Avtar’s extensive experience and success in dealing with and managing a variety of alternative investments will be of tremendous value to us," said Brett Hellerman, CEO of Wood Creek. "He will be a very important factor in Wood Creek’s growth."

Wood Creek recently announced the formation of its first fund, Wood Creek Venture Fund, which seeds emerging hedge funds in non-traditional asset classes. Vasu will also serve as CIO of Wood Creek Venture Fund.

While at Putnam Lovell NBF, Vasu was responsible for quantitative analysis, risk management of hedge fund managers, and evaluation of new managers.  Vasu previously served as President of Innovest Management Corporation, a hedge fund firm based in New Jersey and before that, was in the Global Markets group at Deutsche Bank. Vasu also has extensive fund-of-funds experience, working in portfolio management for a large, high-net-worth family office, where he was directly involved in evaluating and seeding niche strategies.  He earned his MBA from the University of Chicago, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the State University of New York, and both a Bachelor and Masters degrees in Engineering from the Delhi College of Engineering.

Backgroun notes: Wood Creek Capital Management, a joint venture company of Norfolk Management Group and Babson Capital Management (a division of The Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company), was established to develop and invest in niche and emerging alternative strategies, with a primary focus on  non-financial security based strategies.  Wood Creek Capital Management oversees the Wood Creek Venture Fund, a fund focused on seeding managers in niche alternative strategies. Wood Creek is headquartered in New Haven, CT with additional offices in New York and Norfolk, CT.
