NYSE Euronext sees ETF and derivatives growth in October

The NYSE Euronext group, which owns six cash equities and six derivatives exchanges, saw continuing vigorous growth in exchange-traded fund turnover on both sides of the Atlantic during October, while the group’s structured products and derivatives businesses also saw strong activity.

The month was the busiest October ever for European derivatives volumes on Liffe, which were up 34.5 per cent year on year, while the exchange also achieved a new annual volume record with 799 million contracts traded so far this year. The NYSE group saw its handled ETF volume rise 70.5 per cent.

The NYSE group’s operations in ETF trading reported 289 million shares handled daily, up 70.5 per cent from the same period last year with total volume up 58.8 per cent in 2007 to date. NYSE Arca is the first electronic stock exchange to designate a lead market maker for each primary listed ETF, with listings that represent 67 per cent of total assets under management and 42 per cent of ETF trading volume for all US ETFs so far this year.

Year-on-year transactions on Euronext were up 196.7 per cent for ETFs and up 34.7 per cent for Structured Products, including warrants and certificates.

Liffe, NYSE Euronext’s leading futures and options business, had its busiest October ever, saw more than 74 million futures and option contracts traded, and its total of 799 million futures and options contracts traded so far this year has already left behind the 2006 full-year volume of 730 million contracts. Total volume for the first 10 months of the year is up 29.2 per cent compared with 2006.

Year-to-date volumes have grown across the entire product range, the group says, with interest rate products trading 441 million contracts so far this year, up 26.9 per cent on 2006. Equity products traded 347 million contracts in the first 10 months of 2007, up 32.4 per cent, while commodity products traded 10.5 million contracts, up 28.9 per cent.

Bclear processed more than 96 million contracts since the beginning of the year, compared with 51 million traded throughout 2006, and year on year Bclear was up 165.2 per cent at the end of October. Universal stock futures traded record volumes of 58 million since the beginning of the year, compared to a total of 29 million in 2006.

NYSE Arca reported a new all-time record average of 1.66 million equity option contracts executed daily in October, up 110 per cent from the same month of the previous year. More than 258 million equity options contracts have traded since the beginning of 2007, up 67.8 per cent year-to-date.

With 38.2 million total contracts traded in October, a 21.5 per cent increase from the previous record of 31.4 million contracts set in August, NYSE Arca Options also achieved a new record in overall share of trading, capturing 14.2 per cent of all equity options contracts traded, a 4.2 per cent increase year-on-year.

In October, 17.6 million contracts were traded on NYSE Arca Options in the newly-expanded SEC options penny pilot, with 15.8 million, or 90 per cent traded electronically. Share of trading in the 35 penny pilot issues also set a record in October at 17 per cent of industry volumes, ranking NYSE Arca third among all US options exchanges.

Four new ETFs were listed on Euronext’s NextTrack segment in October, bringing the total number of new ETF listings since the beginning of the year to 61, while the NYSE Group saw 15 new exchange-traded product listings, consisting of six ETFs and nine exchange-traded notes. In addition, three new structured products joined the NYSE in October.

NYSE Euronext, which brings together six cash equities exchanges in five countries and six derivatives exchanges in six countries, is a world leader for listings, trading in cash equities, equity and interest rate derivatives, bonds and the distribution of market data, with a combined USD30.3trn in total market capitalisation of listed companies and average daily trading value of approximately USD139bn at the end of September.
