Krusen Capital Management has appointed Jeffrey Volk as chief operating officer and David X Martin as senior risk advisor.

“We are fortunate to have such experienced financial services professionals join the firm as we embark on expanding our alternatives solutions platform while continuing our commitment to best practices,” says Charles Krusen, chief executive.  “The need for alternative investments with their lower volatility is being driven by a combination of the baby boomers entering retirement, the continued increase in longevity, and the beginning of a secular bear market for fixed income.  As members of the management committee, Jeff and David will bring valuable expertise and oversight to the firm’s operational and risk management processes to help us solve this challenge for investors.”

Volk has worked as an advisor to governments, corporations, Forbes 400 families, and financial institutions. Volk is an advisory board member of the LoBue Group and a member of the Department of State’s Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy. Previously, he was a senior manager at Citibank with extensive senior management experience gained over 30 years in the global capital markets.   Prior to leaving Citi, Volk had responsibility for USD4.5trn in fixed income and equities.  Volk was also chief executive officer of Citi International with responsibility for Citi’s high net worth investments business in Latin America, Asia, and Europe.

Martin is a veteran financial executive whose career includes major stints at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Citibank, and AllianceBernstein.  Martin, now an acknowledged expert on risk management, was the founding chairman of the Investment Company Institute’s Risk Committee (ICIRC), and co-chair of the Buy Side Risk Committee, composed of the chief risk officers of the twenty largest asset management firms.  He is also an adjunct professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, and author of Risk and the Smart Investor, published by McGraw Hill in the autumn of 2010 and author of The Nature of Risk, published by Amazon in 2012.  Martin is a member of the Sanctions Subcommittee of the US Department of State’s Advisory Committee on International Economy Policy and the senior advisory board of Oliver Wyman.

While at AllianceBernstein, Martin served both as chief risk officer and a director of Sanford Bernstein. Prior to joining AllianceBernstein, he was chief investment officer of Dublin Fund Distributers and managed a fund of hedge funds.
