Capital Z Investment Partners is to sponsor Aviator Fund Management, LP, an asset management company focused on investing in the key Asian markets.

Connecticut-based Aviator employs multiple strategies and asset classes, including capital structure arbitrage, catalyst driven, relative value volatility, convertible arbitrage and quantitative trading strategies. The firm, which was founded in July 2003, is managed by three senior partners, William Park, Koji Takasumi, and Peter Sparks.

‘We are extremely excited about the prospects of our investment in Aviator,’ says Laurence Cheng CEO of Capital Z. ‘This investment represents an opportunity to back an established team with proven experience executing a relatively unique and differentiated strategy focused on the Asian markets.’

Aviator managing partner and chief investment officer, Park adds: "We sought out a partnership with Capital Z as a way to accelerate the growth of our organisation. There exists significant investment opportunities for our Asia-focused investment approach especially given recent capital market developments across Asia and the limited number of dedicated arbitrage investors focused on these markets."

Prior to founding Aviator, Park who is also responsible for firm-wide strategy and business development, was the Managing Director of HBK Japan, Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of HBK Investments, LP. During his tenure at HBK, he performed several roles including sole Portfolio Manager of the Asian Equities business unit as well as Founder and Head of HBK’s Tokyo operations. Park began his career as a US equity derivatives trader for O’Connor & Associates.

Takasumi, Partner of Aviator, is focused on firm-wide Risk Analysis and the Quantitative Trading strategy. Prior to co-founding Aviator, he was a Senior Vice President at KBC Financial Products where he co-managed the Japanese Single Stock Derivatives Trading Book, having begun his career as a Quantitative Strategist and Derivatives Trader at DE Shaw & Co, LP.

Sparks, Partner of Aviator, is responsible for managing Operations Technology. Prior to co-founding Aviator, he was Vice President and Manager in Goldman Sachs Japan’s technology division in Tokyo where he oversaw building and support of high-volume, back office systems for both the fixed income and equities divisions in Japan and Asia ex-Japan.
