Dallas-based alternative asset manager Highland Capital Management has announced the appointment of Maureen Mitchell as a managing director and global head of institutional sales, strengthening the firm’s distribution capability for its range of alternative fixed income strategies.

Mitchell will report to Jack Yang, a partner and head of business development, and will manage sales professionals focused on institutional clients including endowments and foundations, public funds, insurance companies, corporations and fund of funds as well as investment consultants.

She will continue to build the institutional client team in the coming months with additional hires, reflecting Highland Capital’s commitment to deepening its relationships with institutional investors.

‘The tremendous demand for proven alternative investment managers among institutional investors has resulted in strong interest in Highland Capital, particularly since markets have become more volatile,’ Yang says.

‘We see the opportunity to significantly grow our investor franchise. Maureen is a highly respected industry veteran with broad knowledge of the marketplace for alternative investments and demonstrated management ability. She is an outstanding choice to lead this strategically important initiative for us.’

Says Mitchell: ‘Highland Capital has made great strides to leverage its credit expertise into new product areas for investors in pursuit of alpha. The firm has maintained an excellent long-term track record during one of the most challenging credit market environments of the past century. My goal is to provide exceptional client service to our investors, and to extend Highland Capital’s distribution capabilities given its quality product line-up.’

Mitchell was previously a senior managing director at Bear Stearns Asset Management for 10 years, leading the firm’s global institutional distribution efforts, having earlier launched a variety of alternative investment products and covered consultants and institutional investors for Zurich Scudder. She began her asset management career at Bankers Trust and was subsequently a vice-president and US marketing manager with US Trust, where she headed to foundations and endowments.

Founded in 1993, Highland Capital Management currently manages more than USD38bn for institutional and high net worth investors across a diverse range of asset classes including senior secured loans, high-yield bonds, mezzanine debt, distressed investments, structured products, European credit, real estate and equities. The company also has offices in New York and London.
