Appleby adds investment funds partner in Cayman

Offshore law firm Appleby has appointed Alex Brainis as a partner in the Investment Funds group, in the firms’ Cayman Islands office.

Managing Partner, Bryan Hunter, says: “On behalf of the partners, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Mr Brainis as he joins us from Toronto. He is the second partner to join the Investment Funds team in the past six months, and we are confident that his vast experience in this space ranging from legal expertise, client relations and business development to fund administration will be of great benefit to the firm.”

Brainis joins Appleby from the Intertrust Group where he was Senior Vice President of Business Development for North America as well as Head of Compliance for Intertrust’s AIFMD Management Company service offering in Dublin, Ireland. While at Intertrust, he was instrumental in developing their AIFMD Management company product offering in Dublin as well as originating, developing and maintaining client relationships and managing the on-boarding process involving various AIFMD fund and corporate clients.

Having worked as a lawyer for more than 16 years at a few of the top law firms in Toronto, Canada, Brainis has focused heavily on corporate and commercial matters. Prior to working at Intertrust, he spent seven years with Citco Fund Services, one of the world’s largest hedge fund administrators, as Director of Legal and Compliance responsible for North America and the Caribbean. Prior to that he was a partner with the firm Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP. He holds a law degree and a Master’s Degree in Business law from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Canada.
