Four common misconceptions about the hybrid cloud

Related Topics

By Olivia Munro, Eze Castle Integration – Financial institutions and firms continue to embrace cloud computing technology. While the hybrid cloud is rising in popularity for firms, there are still some common misconceptions about the methodology.

1 Hybrid cloud is a third and new type of cloud

When the hybrid cloud methodology emerged, many were under the impression that this was a third and new type of cloud. However, the Hybrid Cloud is a blend of private and public cloud. This doesn’t necessarily mean that if you have Private and Public Cloud, you are using the hybrid methodology. True Hybrid Cloud means utilizing both Public and Private clouds in a way that limits risk and increases productivity for your organization. The Hybrid Cloud combines the benefits of public cloud, flexibility and cost, with the performance and security of a private cloud.

2 Hybrid cloud can’t deliver the same quality of performance as on-premise IT infrastructure

Many were concerned that cloud environments were not as reliable as on-premise IT infrastructures. While that may have been the case years ago, cloud environments have matured to the point where they are as reliable and sturdy as on-premise IT infrastructure. By utilising the Private Cloud and the Public Cloud, you’re using two different clouds in different locations. This makes your environment more resilient and also provides scalability through the Public Cloud. Additionally, the Hybrid Cloud is extremely flexible and reliable. Applications can be placed in the Public or Private Cloud depending on specific requirements.

3 The hybrid cloud isn’t secure

One of firms’ biggest concerns around the cloud is data privacy and safety as well as regulation and compliance. Many firms choose the Private Cloud because of its reputation as a robust, highly secure private infrastructure. While for some firms Private Cloud may be the best choice, the hybrid cloud can be just as secure and safe as the Private Cloud when properly integrated.  With the Hybrid Cloud, you can store your most sensitive information in the Private Cloud, while storing other information or host applications on the Public Cloud. This ensures safety and the security of your data.

4 Hybrid cloud environments are all the same

Of course, firms have different technology needs, risk profiles and application requirements, therefore there are infinite ways to use the hybrid cloud methodology. There is more than one right way to use the hybrid cloud, and it depends on the needs of your business. In fact, by using the Hybrid Cloud Methodolgy at all, you are acknowledging that no two Cloud Infrastructures are the same. Bringing in an outside consultant or partner to help your firm assess which cloud is right for your firm can be a great way to start if you are unsure of which cloud fits the needs of your firm best.
