Artivest, a provider of alternative funds and technology solutions, has appointed Kamal Jafarnia as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer.

Jafarnia (pictured), brings more than 25 years of experience as an attorney and compliance professional to this role, having advised public and private companies – including alternative investment program sponsors – on complex securities offerings, regulatory and compliance issues, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance.

Jafarnia plans to allocate his time between Artivest’s New York and San Diego headquarters, and reports directly to James Waldinger, Artivest’s Founder and Chief Executive Officer.

“As regulations governing wealth and investment management continue to evolve, Kamal’s expertise will be invaluable for helping us to ensure that the asset managers, financial advisors, and investor clients on our alternative investment platform remain in full compliance through the capital raising and investor communications process,” says James Waldinger, Founder and CEO of Artivest. “We look forward to working with Kamal and harnessing his extensive practical experience to navigate the changing regulatory landscape as Artivest continues to grow and scale.”

Prior to joining Artivest, Jafarnia held a multi-faceted role as Senior Vice President with New York-based WP Carey, a large diversified real estate asset manager and investment trust (REIT) that has more than USD23 billion in total assets under management (as of June 30, 2018). During his tenure as Senior Vice President with WP Carey, Kamal simultaneously served as Executive Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer, and General Counsel of Carey Financial and Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of Carey Credit Advisors.

Previous to WP Carey, Jafarnia served as Counsel in the REIT and securities practice at the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig, LLP in New York. He also counselled funds and broker-dealers as a member of the financial services and products practice group with Alston & Bird LLP in New York.

Earlier in his career, Jafarnia was an early-stage Partner with Franklin Square Capital Partners (now known as FS Investments), a leading alternative asset manager headquartered in Philadelphia with USD24 billion in assets under management (as of June 30, 2018). With Franklin Square, Kamal served as Executive Vice President of Legal and Corporate Development and Chief Compliance Officer. Previous to Franklin Square, Jafarnia also served as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of the predecessor company to Provasi Capital Partners, an alternative investment sponsor and distributor based in Dallas.

“I am impressed with Artivest’s mission to expand access to institutional-quality alternative strategies through proprietary technology, as well as the firm’s automation of the alternative investing process,” says Kamal Jafarnia, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of Artivest. “I am eager to do my part, from a legal and regulatory standpoint, to help Artivest bring best-in-class alternative strategies to more investors globally.”

Jafarnia received his LLM in securities and financial regulation from Georgetown University Law Center, and graduated from Temple University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He also holds his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and government from the University of Texas at Austin.
