Neuberger Berman, a private, independent, employee-owned investment manager, has hired Joe McDonnell as head of portfolio solutions (EMEA).

McDonnell will be part of the quantitative and multi-asset class investments team at Neuberger Berman, reporting to co-heads Erik Knutzen and Doug Kramer.

In this newly-created role, McDonnell will be responsible for designing and overseeing multi-asset mandates and engaging with strategic partners. He will leverage the broader Neuberger Berman platform to identify customised quantitative solutions and to help construct, oversee and implement portfolios to meet specific client objectives.

McDonnell joins from Morgan Stanley Investment Management, where he spent ten years as head of portfolio solutions EMEA. Prior to this role, he spent ten years in corporate defined pension plan management, as head of investments at Shell International, as well as head of fixed income for IBM Europe Retirement plans.

Dik van Lomwel (pictured), head of EMEA and Latin America at Neuberger Berman, says: “In light of the more dynamic market environment, we see an increased need for more customised solutions for our institutional clients. We’ve been building our capabilities in this area and Joe’s presence will enhance this dialogue.”

McDonnell says: “The investment platform’s breadth, depth and level of innovation, combined with a strong corporate culture and willingness to explore opportunities to partner with clients make me excited to join Neuberger Berman.”
