Hedge fund startups in Asia raised just $3.5 billion last year – the lowest annual amount seen since the global financial crisis – as Covid restrictions and geopolitical risks impacted fundraising activity in Hong Kong, according to a report by FinnoExpert.

The report cites unnamed market participants as saying that while more launches in the region are expected this year, demand for hedge funds will remain subdued.

Figures from hedge fund data platform With Intelligence reveals that only 45 hedge funds launched in Asia (including Japan) last year amid a broad market sell-off, down from 78 in 2021.

The figures, which do not include yuan-denominated onshore China funds, show that Hong Kong had the biggest drop in launches, to 22 from 39, while Singapore was steady at 11.
