Balyasny Asset Management has hired Macquarie’s senior commodities technology executive Peter Mill as it continues to scale its global commodities platform, according to a report by eFinancial Careers citing Mill’s LinkedIn profile.
Mill, who previously led commodities technology strategy globally and headed markets technology for EMEA at Macquarie, is set to join Balyasny as head of commodities technology. The role reflects the hedge fund’s ongoing investment in building out the infrastructure behind its expanding commodities trading business.
The move highlights a broader trend of hedge funds recruiting not only trading talent from banks, but also specialised technology professionals capable of supporting increasingly complex physical and derivatives-based commodities strategies.
Balyasny has been steadily expanding its commodities footprint in recent years, including hires from major investment banks and the development of trading capabilities across energy and related markets. The firm has also been building out exposure to physical power and natural gas in Europe, increasing the importance of systems that can handle logistics, scheduling and real-world delivery constraints.
Mill’s appointment comes amid a period of change for bank commodities franchises, with several senior traders and executives leaving traditional institutions for hedge funds and trading firms as industry structures evolve and risk appetites shift.
