Balyasny Asset Management is stepping up its investment in artificial intelligence talent with a new fellowship programme designed to place AI specialists directly alongside portfolio managers and trading teams, according to a report by eFinancial Careers.
The New York-based hedge fund is recruiting multiple full-time participants for its AI Fellowship Program, which combines training with rotations across individual investment teams. The programme is aimed at giving AI professionals a route into permanent roles on trading desks.
Fellows will initially spend several months working with Balyasny's central AI team before undertaking a series of three-month rotations across different trading groups.
During each rotation, the fellow will act as a dedicated AI partner to a portfolio manager, developing tools and applications designed to improve the team's investment and trading processes.
The structure reflects a growing effort among hedge funds to move beyond centralised AI research and embed technical specialists directly within investment teams, where they can develop applications around specific trading strategies and workflows.
Balyasny's central AI operation had about 20 researchers as of March and is led by Charlie Flanagan, a former Google employee.
The fellowship is aimed at candidates with at least a master's degree and between three and five years of professional experience. The positions reportedly offer salaries of up to $225,000.
