Commodities veteran departs Balyasny after turbulent trading week

Related Topics

Balyasny Asset Management has parted company with senior commodities specialist Damien Courvalin, who joined the firm in 2023 to head up a commodities intelligence group, according to a report by eFinancial Careers.

Courvalin’s departure follows reports that the multi-strategy hedge fund declined about 3.5% during the week to 6 March amid sharp market swings linked to geopolitical tensions and the conflict in Iran.

Courvalin previously spent more than a decade at Goldman Sachs, where he served as head of energy research and covered a wide range of commodity markets including metals, agriculture and oil. At Balyasny he worked within the firm’s growing commodities platform led by Dan Deighton, another former Goldman Sachs managing director who joined the hedge fund in 2022 as global head of commodities.
