Former Odey AM funds rank among top 10 performers for April

Two funds previously controlled by Odey Asset Management saw strong performances, ranking them among the top 10 best performing funds globally in April, according to data from Société Générale.

The Odey Absolute Return Focus Fund and the CF Odey Absolute Return Fund, both managed by portfolio manager James Hanbury, achieved gains of 16.7% and 9.61% respectively.

Both funds — as well as three others managed by Hanbury, plus fund manager Jamie Grimston — were transferred to London-based hedge fund Lancaster Investment Management last July, prior to the announcement of Odey Asset Management’s closure in October.

The performance of both funds was bolstered by their short books, enabling these two long/short funds to outperform the three other long-only funds also managed by Hanbury at Lancaster Investment Management, according to a MarketWatch source.

Odey Asset Management, founded by British billionaire Crispin Odey in 1991 with funds from George Soros, announced its closure following a Financial Times investigation detailing accusations of sexual assault and harassment against Odey by 13 women.

Hanbury, who joined Odey Asset Management in 2008, reportedly made £110m in 2016 by shorting the British pound following its drop to 31-year lows on the news of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.
