New York investment veterans launch AI-native hedge fund in Switzerland

A group of New York-based investment professionals has launched a new stock research and asset management business in Zug, Switzerland, alongside an AI-driven global equity long-short hedge fund, according to a report by Finews.

Symbit Capital officially began operations on 1 July and launched the Symbit Global Equity L/S Fund at the same time. The firm combines fundamental discretionary research with proprietary artificial intelligence models designed to generate investment views across global equity markets.

The technology is built around a long-term fundamental investment process developed by the firm’s founders, who said it was used to generate profits at the billion-dollar scale while they were working at Norway’s sovereign wealth fund.

Symbit plans to develop a range of strategies, including absolute-return long-short, long-only, portable alpha and customised investment mandates. Its target investor base includes private banks, asset and wealth managers, family offices, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and funds of funds.

The company was co-founded by Norwegian investment professionals Trym Steinset Torvund and Marius Skrondal, who relocated from New York to Switzerland to establish the business.

Both previously worked as portfolio managers at Norges Bank Investment Management’s New York office. Torvund worked on the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global from 2016 to 2025.

Former GAM Investment Management chief executive Tristan Brenner and investment professional Alex Ring later joined the business as partners.

Symbit said it selected Zug because of Switzerland’s regulatory stability, tax environment and established financial services industry. The firm also cited the wider Greater Zurich Area’s access to technology and investment talent.

The flagship hedge fund is a global equity long-short strategy aimed at professional investors. It targets broadly market-neutral exposure, with gross leverage of around 200%, a concentrated portfolio of approximately 10 to 15 core long positions and a larger short book.

The alternative investment fund has been registered for pre-marketing in several EU and EEA jurisdictions and is also expected to access UK investors through the country’s private placement regime.

Symbit currently has four employees and expects to add one or two investment professionals over the next year as it expands its research capabilities.

The firm’s AI system is designed to accelerate the fundamental research process by assessing companies against frameworks covering business models, execution and investor sentiment.

Marius Skrondal said the firm’s investment edge would increasingly depend on the ability to process information at scale.

He said the founders had spent the past year building an AI system around their investment philosophy, allowing them to compress weeks of fundamental research into a much shorter period.
