Ansatz Capital, a New York-based proprietary trading firm established by former hedge fund and trading firm professionals including DE Shaw Research's Albert Shieh, has established a UK subsidiary, according to a report by eFinancial Careers.
The move positions the firm alongside other niche quant players looking to tap into talent and opportunities in Europe.
Founded in 2013, Ansatz specialises in equities and futures markets with a focus on quantitative strategies.
According to UK filings, the firm incorporated Ansatz Capital UK Ltd earlier this year, with its registered office in The Minister Building near Fenchurch Street. While the firm has maintained a small UK presence for some time, the official UK entity signals a more structured expansion effort.
Ansatz has already been quietly building its London team. Recent hires include quant researcher Gabriele Abbati, who joined in December 2023 from Man AHL, and quant developer Roman Rubanenko, who arrived from Hudson River Trading the same month. Another addition, software developer Eugene Nemchenko, transitioned from WorldQuant in mid-2023.
Ansatz remains a boutique player in the competitive quant trading landscape, operating with a lean team in the "low tens" in terms of headcount. A former employee previously described the firm as consisting of “a handful of people in their early thirties making millions annually.”
