The board of directors of the Borsa Italiana has met to discuss the possibility of building a European Exchange based on a federal model.

The idea of a federal exchange project based on an industry model to suit the needs of all markets potentially involved, was initially proposed by CEO Massimo Capuano. The board has now invited him, with the support of a steering committee, to begin talks with interested parties.

Borsa Italiana says that while it is fully aware of the complexities of this project, it also firmly believes in the potential for a European federal Exchange capable of leading to further consolidation in the continent and open to further international alliances in the future.
