Merlin Securities, a broker-dealer specialising in technology-driven prime brokerage services, has announced the appointment of Ron Suber as a senior partner, head of global sales and marketing and a member of the firm’s executive committee.

Suber will be responsible for expanding the firm’s presence and market share across the industry, including developing the use of Merlin’s proprietary multi-custodial reporting technology by medium-sized and large multi-prime hedge funds, and will report to managing partner and co-founder Stephan Vermut.

He previously spent 14 years at Bear Stearns, where he was a senior managing director and manager of global clearing sales, encompassing prime brokerage and services for broker-dealers and registered investment advisors. For the past 20 months Suber was president of Chicago-based Spectrum Global Fund Administration.

According to Merlin, he enjoys deep and longstanding relationships with many leading money managers as well as lawyers, prime brokers, institutional investors, technology and business consulting firms, administrators, accounting and audit firms, as well as order management system providers and direct market access trading firms.

‘Ron’s vision, leadership and team building skills are the perfect combination with Merlin’s unique technology-driven approach that has allowed us to succeed in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment,’ Vermut says. ‘His success has been in understanding a client’s needs and formulating real-world solutions while keeping the manager’s best interests in mind.’

Adds Suber: ‘Over the last four years, Merlin has redefined the prime brokerage industry and set the standard for single and multi-prime attribution reporting and analytics. With its enhanced reporting platform and custodial and clearing relationships with both JPMorgan/Bear Stearns and Goldman Sachs, the opportunities are immense.’

Merlin Securities, which has offices in New York and San Francisco offers reporting, trading and operational services to hedge funds through technology-driven prime brokerage services. The firm received a USD20m investment from Silicon Valley venture capital firm Sequoia Capital in an expansion round of financing.

Merlin’s reporting platform for single and multi-prime hedge funds offers managers a fund reporting tool that includes customisable reporting, absolute and relative performance attribution models, risk management components and multi-prime portfolio aggregation. The firm has agency and outsourced trading desks that provide clients with trading flexibility and access to all markets.
