Handpicked Films has signed an agreement with New York-based fund of hedge funds and private equity fund manager Ginepri Capital Partners to oversee a multi-year programme of film production.
Los Angeles-based Handpicked, run by film veterans Michel Shane and Anthony Romano, will act as executive producers and have oversight over the first Ginepri motion picture slate. The first series of 11 films will involve investment of USD110m with three more slates lined up to follow. The range of film budgets is USD5m to USD40m.
Shane is working with Ginepri Capital managing partner SK Dean in financial structuring and evaluating distribution channels for the films, while Ginepri and Handpicked will work on an ongoing basis to develop slates of films for the term of the deal.
‘Both parties are bringing their expertise to the table, and we are very complementary,’ Shane says. ‘The difference between Ginepri and everyone else in this space is that this will be an actively managed programme. We will all be very hands-on.’
Ginepri Capital Partners has more than USD10bn under active management and a leveraged capacity in its fund of hedge funds of approximately USD4.6bn. The firm trades in US and international futures, options on futures and forward contracts, a diversified portfolio that includes currencies, interest rates and equities, to hedge against changes in interest rates, currency, exchange rates and stock index values.
Shane and Romano have established Handpicked as a leading independent producer specialising in financial structuring and feature film development. In the last few years they have worked with Hollywood luminaries such as Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Nick Nolte and Jennifer Garner, and are currently presently working on Buddha, written by Oscar-winning writer David Ward for Dr Modi’s M-Global Films.
