Following the merger of the two law firms Collas Day in Guernsey and Crill Canavan in Jersey two months ago – renaming themselves as Collas Crill – the firm has announced that it plans to open a Singapore office in Q3 this year. It will become the first Channel Islands-based law firm to have a Singapore footprint. Both Jersey and Guernsey law will be practiced there. Guernsey-based partner, Sean Cheong (pictured), is to relocate to Singapore to head up the new office. It is believed that the decision to expand into Asia is in response to institutional and private clients in Asia wanting Channel Islands legal services. Guernsey fiduciary services will also be offered through Guernsey Trust Company, which the Collas Crill partners own a majority stake in. Cheong, who hails from Malaysia and is qualified to practice in Malaysia, England, Wales and Guernsey, said: “We are very excited to be the first Channel Islands law firm to set up in Singapore. We feel it is important to be able to support our clients who have operations in the region. It also gives us a great opportunity to access the emerging markets from a well-established hub.”
