100 Women in Hedge Funds names UK charity of the year

Related Topics

100 Women in Hedge Funds has named Shine as its UK charity of the year and beneficiary of its annual London fundraising event, to be held on 7 October 2009.

This year’s focus for 100 Women in Hedge Funds’ philanthropic efforts is education. Shine is a UK charity dedicated to funding and developing educational programmes, giving grants to projects that work with children who are struggling to learn, those who are very bright but underachieving, young people in care, and those not engaging with school at all. Projects include intensive one-on-one literacy and numeracy support, Saturday enrichment programmes, homework support and internet-assisted learning – all specifically designed to make a difference and monitored to ensure they have an impact.

Effie Datson, chair of 100 Women in Hedge Funds in London, says: ‘It is always a difficult process to pick from many eligible beneficiaries; we believe in Shine and are thrilled to help fund the important support Shine gives to educational programmes. Shine is investing in a meaningful and measurable way in the future prosperity of the UK, while bringing hope, happiness, and a sense of achievement to children that might otherwise have been left behind. The work Shine does is vital – now more than ever.

Sarah Brown, patron of Shine (pictured), says: ‘I am very proud to be a patron of Shine. It is not just another educational charity – it funds only those programmes which have a real and measurable impact on improving the educational attainment of those children and young people who face the greatest challenges in life. The people at Shine are committed, passionate about education and very hands on: they add enormous value by giving not just cheques, but also top professional support to their educational initiatives. Shine has set out deliberately to encourage the sharing of best practice, leading to replication of the most successful models. Shine has a passion for changing children’s lives, and that is one I share. Every child really does matter. And I know in the future, hundreds of young people will look back at their time on one of Shine’s initiatives and say ‘that was the moment when my life changed.

100 Women in Hedge Funds serves over 10,000 alternative investment management investors and practitioners through educational, professional development and philanthropic initiatives.
