Citadel’s flagship Wellington fund delivered a strong performance in July, benefiting from the acquisition of a discounted portfolio of artificial intelligence-related equities from hedge fund Situational Awareness following the firm’s rapid deleveraging during the recent market correction, according to report by the FT.
The multi-strategy manager, which oversees more than $71 billion in assets, generated a monthly return of approximately 6%, taking year-to-date gains into the low double digits, according to people familiar with the matter.
The transaction followed a sharp reversal in AI-related equities after an extended rally earlier this year. A number of widely held semiconductor and infrastructure names experienced significant declines during July, prompting heavy losses for leveraged investors.
Situational Awareness, led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, had been among the year’s standout performers before the market sell-off. Following a sharp deterioration in portfolio performance, the firm moved to dispose of the majority of its listed equity holdings through an accelerated sale process completed in less than 24 hours.
Market participants said Citadel acquired the portfolio at a material discount after competing with other large quantitative and multi-manager firms, including Jane Street and Millennium. The transaction is widely viewed as having provided liquidity during a period of heightened volatility in AI-focused equities.
Several companies held within the portfolio subsequently rebounded, with investors suggesting the completion of the sale helped ease forced-selling pressure across the sector.
The acquisition is consistent with Citadel founder Ken Griffin’s long-established approach of deploying capital during periods of market stress. Over the past two decades, the firm has repeatedly acquired portfolios or trading books from distressed counterparties, including following the collapses of Amaranth Advisors and Sowood Capital Management.
The latest transaction reinforces Citadel’s ability to act as a liquidity provider during periods of dislocation, leveraging its balance sheet and execution capabilities to capitalise on market volatility while supporting broader market functioning.
