London hedge fund manager, Sloane Robinson, one of the city’s best-known funds having been around since 1993, announced this week it would be teaming up with Deutsche Bank to launch a UCITS-compliant Asia fund in the New Year. The fund will be managed by the same investment team responsible for managing the firm’s flagship Asia hedge fund. Sloane Robinson has long had its antennae tuned in to Asia and emerging markets. Its Asia flagship fund has delivered impressive compound annualised returns of 17.4 per cent p.a. since inception in 1994, using an equity l/s strategy to deliver absolute returns. Like the offshore fund, the Asia newcits will have a Pan-Asian mandate. It is expected to start trading some time in Q1, 2011, subject to regulatory approval. Hedgeweek spoke to Sloane Robinson about the launch, but they were not able to give any official comment. They did confirm, however, that the flagship Asia fund is very UCITS-friendly given that it uses no leverage, which suggests the newcits should come close to mirroring the offshore fund’s performance.

To that end, the fund will have a long bias and will adjust exposures, using a fundamental bottom-up approach to stock picking, depending on how the markets perform. It will be hosted on Deutsche Bank’s DB Platinum Platform and joins a cast of other high profile funds; the most notable being the recent onboarding of John Paulson’s UCITS version of his Advantage Fund. Commenting on the news, Deutsche Bank’s Global Head of Fund Derivatives, Stephane Farouze (pictured), said that they were delighted to be working with Sloane Robinson on this initiative. Hugh Sloane, founder and CEO of the hedge fund said that the collaboration was a continuation of their overall UCITS strategy “to establish relationships with high calibre platforms”. “We have chosen to work with Deutsche Bank because of their broad experience in the UCITS environment and commitment to deliver excellence,” said Sloane in the official press release.
