Record year for NYSE Euronext’s global derivatives business

Related Topics

NYSE Euronext’s global derivatives business achieved a record year in 2010, according to final volume data released by the company. Overall average daily volume of 8.43 million contracts represented an increase of 24% on 2009, while volumes from clients based outside Europe, particularly in the United States and Asia, continued to show above-average growth.

NYSE Euronext’s European derivatives business, NYSE Liffe, traded a record 1.2 billion contracts in 2010.  Every day an average 4.7 million contracts, representing business with a notional value of EUR1.2 trillion, was traded through NYSE Liffe, an increase of 14.9% on 2009.

NYSE Euronext’s U.S. equity options business performed even more strongly.  NYSE Arca and NYSE Amex traded a total of 924 million contracts in the year. Full-year average daily volume, of 3.7m contracts, was up 38.9% on 2009.

“I would like to thank our customers for enabling us to establish a new record for our business, in a challenging year," says Garry Jones (pictured), Executive Vice President and head of global derivatives at NYSE Euronext. "In our US options business, our strategy of offering clients a clear choice of two market models, in NYSE Arca and NYSE Amex, is succeeding, as the strong growth we have seen there shows.  The strong growth of our overall US business is significant and promising because this is a key market for us in the coming year.  Regulatory approval for New York Portfolio Clearing permitting, we will launch financial futures on NYSE Liffe U.S. later this quarter, with clearing and innovative single-pot margining through NYPC.”
