Tom Wagner, co-founder of hedge fund Knighthood Capital Management, is closing in on the acquisition of a stake in English Football League club Birmingham City FC, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The report cites unnamed sources familiar with the matter as confirming that the deal by the boss of the $9 billion New York-based fund, which focuses on event-driven and distressed credit investments, includes the purchase of the club’s St Andrew’s Stadium.

Should the deal progress, Wagner would join other US investors in making investments in the UK’s lower leagues with the likes of Ipswich Town, Lincoln City and Crawley Town having already attracted Stateside investment.

The Blues who last played top flight football in 2011, currently sit 15th in the Championship, the second-tier of English football.
